My coaching philosophy

My philosophy centres on the belief that every leader has untapped potential waiting to be uncovered. Through a collaborative and reflective inquiry process, I guide individuals on a journey of self-discovery — helping them gain clarity, recognise their strengths, and embrace transformative growth.

I see coaching as a partnership, not a prescription. One that fosters trust, encourages exploration, and empowers meaningful change. My role is to ask the right questions, create the right conditions, and walk alongside you as you do the hard and rewarding work of becoming a more effective leader.

I bring 30+ years of business leadership experience to every coaching engagement. I've sat in the rooms where the difficult decisions get made. That context informs how I coach — with commercial realism, not just psychological theory. And increasingly, I focus on the thinking skills that matter most in the age of AI: systems thinking, critical thinking, and the ability to connect the dots across complexity.

What we work on

  • Systems thinking Moving beyond surface events to understand the patterns, structures, and mental models that create recurring problems
  • Critical thinking & first principles Questioning assumptions, separating signal from noise, and reasoning from evidence rather than habit
  • Connecting the dots Synthesising across domains, spotting patterns others miss, and forming original perspectives in complex environments
  • Clarity and self-awareness Understanding your leadership strengths, blind spots, and default patterns
  • Decision-making under pressure Developing the mental frameworks to make better decisions in ambiguous situations
  • Executive presence and influence Communicating with authority and credibility across levels and contexts
  • Navigating difficult relationships Team conflicts, stakeholder dynamics, and organisational politics
  • Strategic thinking Seeing the big picture, anticipating challenges, creating actionable plans
  • Leadership identity Discovering your own unique leadership style — rather than copying someone else's
  • Work-life integration Managing energy, boundaries, and sustainability across a demanding career

A systems thinking approach to coaching

AI can summarise a board report in seconds. It can model scenarios, flag patterns in data, and generate options faster than any analyst. What it cannot do is think systemically — to look beneath the surface of a problem and understand why it keeps coming back, year after year, leader after leader.

In an age where machines handle the analytical layer, the distinctively human skills — systems thinking, critical thinking, and the ability to connect dots across domains — become more valuable, not less. These are capabilities I deliberately develop in every coaching engagement.

One of the core frameworks I use is the Iceberg Model of Systems Thinking. Most leaders spend their time and energy at the very top of the iceberg: reacting to events. The coaching work I find most transformative happens much further down.

Level 1

Events

What just happened? The incident, the result, the crisis. Most organisations react here — and only here. Quick fixes address events. They rarely prevent the next one.

— waterline — visible to all —
Level 2

Patterns & Trends

What keeps happening? Identifying recurring behaviour over time — the same conflicts, the same failures, the same dynamics repeating across different people and contexts.

Level 3

Systemic Structures

Why does it keep happening? The processes, incentives, policies, and relationship dynamics that produce the patterns — whether by design or by default. Changing structure changes behaviour.

Level 4

Mental Models

What beliefs make this possible? The deepest layer — the assumptions, values, and worldviews that shape everything above. Most are invisible, unchallenged, and decades old. Lasting change starts here.

Most leadership development works at Level 1. Most strategy work operates at Levels 2 and 3. The coaching conversations I find most powerful almost always reach Level 4 — surfacing the mental models that no one has thought to question, because they have always been treated as facts.

This is the work. And it is irreducibly human.

How the coaching engagement works

01

Discovery conversation

A free, no-obligation 30-minute conversation where we explore whether coaching is the right intervention for your situation, and whether we're a good fit to work together.

02

Coaching contract

We agree on the focus, structure, and duration of the engagement. Most coaching programmes run for 3–6 months, with bi-weekly sessions of 60–90 minutes each.

03

The coaching journey

Each session is a structured conversation — part challenge, part support. Between sessions, you apply what we've explored and bring your experiences back into the next conversation.

04

Review and close

We review progress against your original goals, consolidate the growth achieved, and discuss what continuing development might look like.

Start with a conversation

The first step is simply a conversation. No obligation, no sales pitch. I want to understand your situation and whether coaching is the right approach. If it isn't, I'll tell you that too.
